Here is the news that came out of the FLCL 2 Panel from Anime Expo today.
Jason DeMarco and Production IG are just beginning the process of FLCL 2 being made, there’s no specific date as of yet other than that it’ll premiere in mid 2017 / early 2018.
Jason DeMarco and Gill Austin along with Production I.G vice president and producer Maki Terashima-Furuta have been trying to do FLCL 2 since 2005. Even when Toonami was canceled back in 2008, they were still trying to make it happen. Jason DeMarco also stated that the original FLCL will re-air again on Toonami, leading into seasons 2 and 3.
Maki Terashima-Furuta announced at the panel that Japanese rock band “The Pillows” will also return to handle the soundtrack along with Psycho-Pass’ anime and film’s chief director Katsuyuki Motohiro who will supervise the series. Maki Terashima-Furuta also announced that the first series’ original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will return to design the characters for the new seasons. Writer Hideto Iwai (“Last Dinner”) will also be joining this seasons production as well.
Here is what Maki Terashima-Furuta and Jason DeMarco said in the press release that came out back in March:
Maki Terashima-Furuta – “FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant,” “This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.”
Jason DeMarco – “The original FLCL is an anime classic and has been a fixture on Adult Swim since we first laid eyes on it. “I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators for Toonami, where it belongs.”
Adult Swim describes the new seasons’ story:
Many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
All of these questions and more will be answered in the new season of the series, which is set to premiere in late 2017/early 2018 on Adult Swim.”
