Here is the recap of what happened at the FLCL Panel at C2E2 yesterday with Jason DeMarco, Maki Terashima-Furuta, Kari Wahlgren, and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa. As previously stated, Jason DeMarco and Adult Swim have wanted to revive “FLCL” for over a decade. Toonami and Adult Swim convinced Production IG that they would give them complete artistic freedom to make this sequel possible. Kari Wahlgren stated that Haruko in the original “FLCL” was her first ever anime character she’s voiced and that she thought she’d never voice this character again, but now she is and she feels that it’s neat that Haruko has grown up as she has. New viewers can jump into the upcoming sequels without seeing the original. However, it is recommended to watch the original “FLCL”.
Since its been 15 years since the original “FLCL” was made, some of the original creators couldn’t return to make the sequel, so new creators were brought in. CGI and animation technology has advanced, which made working on the sequel easier, but there were still challenges. Jason knew they had to give their 110% effort to get even close to what the original was. The scripts for the sequels have regularly changed during the new seasons creation for various reasons, proving how difficult this production really is, which has delayed things a bit.
Since “FLCL 1” was a story about a boy going through puberty, “FLCL 2” is a story about a girl going through puberty. “FLCL 3” is, in a way, a story of friendship. There will be some differences between Midomi going through her “coming of age”, being a high schooler and all, compared to Naota’s being in middle school.
Maki gave a bit of a spoiler, according to her, some of the characters from the original FLCL are now married in the new seasons.
The spirit of FLCL is going and doing your own thing, creating your own version of what that is now.
The C2E2 audience was the first to see the sneak peak of the first episode of. FLCL Progressive”, and also got free FLCL Bags.
