Immediately after finishing airing the premieres, Toonami would rerun season one of Space Dandy at 11:30p for a little while before bumping it down to 12:30 in May to make room for a new show, Attack on Titan, which would premiere its English language dub on Toonami in Dandy’s old time slot. In the meantime, while waiting for new episodes of Space Dandy, I remember sitting through the reruns of season one because I liked it enough to rewatch, even though I knew the jokes. It’s a testament to how good that season is, because normally, reruns this early on would not keep my attention for long, but new episodes were right around the corner.
On June 5th, 2014, Funimation announced that Space Dandy would be back on Toonami just a month later on July 5th, with those new episodes premiering at 12:30am. I found it interesting that Space Dandy wouldn’t move back to 11:30 for the new season, but I can understand that Attack on Titan was likely a massive hit with the Toonami audience. I was one of those who watched all of Titan on Toonami, but I figured that crowd would’ve followed it even if they bumped it down to midnight. I guess at the time, keeping Attack on Titan on at 11:30p, followed by Bleach, then world premiere episodes of Space Dandy at 12:30am made sense. I wasn’t horribly bothered by it as I assume others were, and in hindsight, I do find it disappointing they didn’t want to move Bleach down to 12:30am for a bit just so Space Dandy could’ve kept an earlier time slot. Regardless, more episodes were on the way in a few short weeks.
When it came to the night of its premiere, Toonami celebrated by finishing up its reruns of season one by rerunning the last two episodes to build up the premiere of the second season. They would also make a short music video/promo for the season two premiere. That music video used The Death Set’s I Miss You Beau Velasco for the music track and it is one of my favorite promos they ever made. You can check it out here: Toonami – Space Dandy Season Two Promo (HD 1080p) Splicing footage from both seasons together with the music resulted in one of the best music videos they’ve ever made to this day.
The season premiere kicked off with, “I Can’t Be the Only One, Baby,” an episode where the crew of the Aloha Oe jump across the multiverse, coming in contact with the Dandy, QT, and Meow of those universes. Dandy was so far ahead of the curve that they were doing multiverse stuff long before Marvel decided to introduce it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This must be one of the best episodes in the entire series and a great kick off to its second season. The joke of Dandy and his different universe incarnations continues to grow over the course of the episode while warping the main Dandy’s own universe until it reaches its dumbest conclusion. I laughed so hard when watching this episode that I had to pause at the end because I couldn’t stop laughing. That’s a high endorsement from me when I have to stop the episode to catch my breath. You know you watched an amazing piece of comedy when it knows how to pace itself and time itself well to what’s happening.
Episode fourteen started off with a bang but unfortunately the rest of Dandy falters a bit. I want to make it clear that Space Dandy is a good show overall, but recently, I feel like the series is only brought up in select circles, with it otherwise largely forgotten by the broader anime community. Even Shinichiro Watanabe has seemingly been disappointed in recent years that Space Dandy didn’t get the same traction his other works did, at least based on this old tweet from Jason DeMarco (SVP of action and anime) made. Honestly, after watching it all the way through for the first time since 2014, I can see why because the second season of Dandy was not as strong as its first.
