“A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path, he will then have to choose. The boy doesn’t always know. At some point, the boy then becomes an adult and learns what he is able to become. Joy and sadness forever will accompany this. He is confronted with a choice. When this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy. The boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: A boy has the right to dream. For those endless possibilities that are stretched out before him. We must remember, all men were once boys.”
– Outlaw Star (Ep. 02)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for August 26-27, 2017.The summer season comes to a close as Jaco and Bulma learn more information on the Super Dragon Balls, while Avdol battles Polnareff, and Gene awakens Melfina as pirates come for them, among other great moments.
Of course, it was a pretty tough night for trending due to the buzz of Mayweather’s TKO victory against McGregor dominating the trends, but Toonami fans managed to see some trends before and after the fight proper (which occurred during the latter part of JoJos and through Tokyo Ghoul) with both Dragon Balls, JoJos, and Outlaw Star trending in the US during their respective East Coast airings. Meanwhile on tumblr, Toonami would trend as with Dragon Ball Super, JoJo’s, and Hunter x Hunter as well.
Finally, Dragon Ball Super would for the 19th time make it to Nielsen Social’s top 5 most talked about shows on the day on Twitter and Facebook, making it to the top spot for the second time in the show’s run. This is also the 32th time a Toonami show has reached this list since we started recording this feat.
The following week was Memorial Day weekend, so Toonami took the night off from regular festivities as a marathon of episodes 123-130 of DBZ Kai was shown. Since it was a marathon night and due to the buzz of the start of the college football season, among other things, most fans took the night off from livetweeting, and thus no trends were spotted on the night.
The Universe 6 saga is ramping up, and as Universes 6 and 7 compete to determine who gets to use the Super Dragon Balls, Goku and the crew will be fighting with or against some new faces during the tournament. For the voice actors who will be playing them, Funimation had released the cast list last week, which you can see below.
- Botamo: Cris George
- Cabba: Clifford Chapin
- Frost: Greg Ayres
- Hit: Matthew Mercer
- Magetta: TBA
- Monaka: Daman Mills
Interesting news regarding the block this week. On Thursday, perhaps to compliment Outlaw Star for a blast from the past from Toonami and Adult Swim’s previous golden age, Toonami will once again be expanding from 11pm to 4am, as Cowboy Bebop will be having another run at 3am, following Outlaw Star at 2:30am. The encore run of Attack on Titan season 2 meanwhile will continue to end the block this time at 3:30am.
In addition, Toonami would also host a panel on DragonCon on Friday, and while there wasn’t much news from this panel, it was announced that the newest Total Immersion Event, Countdown, will premiere on November 4th.
Finally, for those interested in Lootcrate style swag, Adult Swim is creating their own premium box subscription service, the [adult swim] box. The box’s contents will have random content featuring a theme from one of Adult Swim’s shows each season, with the Toonami-verse kicking things off for the fall. If you’re interested, subscriptions can be purchased on adultswimbox.com.
We’ll see you again tonight as always, but of course we do wish to send our thoughts and prayers to those affected by the events of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and all the recent disasters in general. We hope everyone affected is doing okay, and if you wish to help, please send donations to Funimation’s relief drive, Sentai’s relief drive, or other reputable charities. Every little bit helps, as these communities pick themselves up and rebuild their lives.
