Toonami Trending Rundown for September 4-5 and 11-12, 2021

Last Updated on by Daniel Limjoco

“For 10 years, I could not get her out of my head. Her shouting my name, amidst the fire and Terror. Her trembling hand, her eyes filled with sadness and despair as she drifted away, and The Emptiness I felt afterward. I’ll never let go of her hand again. It doesn’t matter who or what she is. I’m going to save Fena, and if anybody tries to get in my way, I’ll kill them without mercy.”

–          Yukimaru, Fena: Pirate Princess (Ep. 06)

This Toonami Trending Rundown is a double-feature for September 4-5 and 11-12, 2021.

On the night of September 4-5, #Toonami trended in the United States on Twitter alongside Fena: Pirate Princess, Yashahime, and Food Wars! #Toonami would also trend on Tumblr. For the following week, the night of September 11-12, #Toonami trended in the U.S. on Twitter alongside Fena: Pirate Princess, Yashahime, Food Wars!, and Black Clover. #Toonami also trended on Tumblr. The full list, including statistics and tweet counts from the Twitter app, can be seen below.

This week’s feature was a new music video by Iron Maiden, titled ‘Stratego’ from their new album ‘Senjutsu’. You can check it out below.

New York Comic Con next month will have two panels regarding the block’s next co-productions. While there will be an in-person event this year at the Javits Center, the panels themselves will be virtual screenings due to COVID-19 precautions. On Thursday, October 7 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Eastern, Toonami and Crunchyroll will host a Shenmue panel, titled “Continuing the Legacy.” Then immediately after from 6:45-7:45 Eastern, there will be a Blade Runner panel also hosted by Toonami and Crunchyroll titled “The Future of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.”

Aniplex USA and Funimation announced on Wednesday that the Blu-ray for Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is scheduled for release on December 21. The limited edition is available for pre-order on RightStuf for $69.98. A standard edition will also be released by Funimation, with further information including a price point still to be announced.

On a related note, Fuji TV has announced that the second season of Demon Slayer, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc, will air “every Sunday” starting in October at 11:15 PM JST. As with the previous season, Funimation has confirmed that they will be simulcasting the new season on their streaming service. However, Crunchyroll, who also simulcast the previous season, and despite that their merger with Funimation was completed last month, has not confirmed that they will be doing the same.

Aniplex also released a new trailer for the upcoming release of Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night in Japanese theaters this upcoming October 30.

It should be noted that with the next canon installments of Demon Slayer and Sword Art Online being movies, this could potentially have ramifications for Toonami viewers in regards to future seasons of both franchises. As Aniplex does not make television retellings or recaps of their canon films, combined with budgetary issues preventing Toonami from airing many movies in the modern era, there is concern among some viewers that Aniplex and Toonami will risk disenfranchising viewers by skipping those essential storylines over for the Toonami audience. While there are rumors that Demon Slayer’s upcoming second season will start with a TV retelling of Mugen Train to avoid this issue, ufotable has not confirmed or denied that this will be the case as of now. If you missed it, I discuss this looming problem in further detail in my editorial: “Is Toonami’s “No Movies” Policy Coming Back to Haunt Its Viewers?
