After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no less than 100k anime fans will be converging onto Downtown Los Angeles as Anime Expo, the biggest anime convention in North America returns. With Anime Expo’s significance in the anime convention calendar, not surprisingly some of the biggest anime news of the year is often announced here.
Among some of the things to look forward to, Production IG will be showcasing three of their upcoming Toonami originals, Housing Complex C, FLCL sequels, and Uzumaki front and center. Meanwhile, Sword Art Online will be commemorating its 10th Anniversary, with potential news including that of the upcoming second Progressive Film, titled Scherzo of Deep Night. Bleach fans will be looking forward to the Thousand-Year Blood War finally being animated, while it’s been announced that there will even be a 3D modern Trigun reboot, titled Trigun Stampede. And fans will have the opportunity to attend World Premiere events, including the premiere of Made in Abyss Season 2, the upcoming Dr. Stone Special Episode – RYUSUI, and the My Hero Academia OVAs that takes place between seasons 5 and 6.
Hand-picked from the official schedule, this is a curated list of the various events and panels that will be of interest of Toonami viewers, including panels of shows that have been featured on Toonami, as well as industry panels of companies that have a partnership with the block.
While largely-attended events have Anime Expo have returned, the COVID-19 pandemic remains ongoing, and with coronavirus variants and infection rates on the rise, those attending will need to be vigilant in a packed Convention Center to prevent themselves and others from getting infected. Attendees should know that alongside the usual processes of picking up badges (if you weren’t mailed one) and going through security checkpoints, among other things, fans will need to bring proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to pick up a COVID-19 verification wristband. Fans can pick these wristbands up at tents set up at Chick Hearn Court (just north of Crypto.com Arena, formerly known as the Staples Center) and must wear them throughout the duration of the convention or will need to redo this process. In addition, to prevent the spread of COVID with the expected large crowds, fans will need to wear masks for entry.
Anime Expo on Twitter: “We have extended our COVID-19 Verification Area Hours at Chick Hearn Court. Please plan your AX attendance accordingly. See our Hours and Maps: https://t.co/5c2LLUeI6a pic.twitter.com/dZFsqgWXDW / Twitter”

And for those who couldn’t snag a ticket or decided to sit out this year due to COVID concerns, fear not as Anime Expo will be hosting another edition of Anime Expo Lite on their Twitch and YouTube pages, which will feature live streaming of panels that take place in the Petree Hall.
Do note that there is a possibility that there can be Toonami-related news in panels that aren’t listed below, but fans should be on the lookout for any possible announcements. We’ll be on the ground in Los Angeles covering the events of Anime Expo, so for potential breaking news announcements and live-tweets, be sure to follow @ToonamiSquad on Twitter.
This schedule list will be updated if more information becomes available and is subject to change. All listed times are in Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).

Despite that Toonami premiered the dub of season 1 from October 13, 2019 – May 3, 2020, Demon Slayer won’t be returning to the lineup anytime soon thanks to Sony “freezing” Toonami from renewing the series in part due to Aniplex’s asking price far exceeded what Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) were willing to pay.
